Wearing Latex

In general, latex garments are designed to be very tight-fitting – this can make them difficult to put onhonour latex army tie without the aid of a lubricant or ‘dressing aid’.

The best method of preparing latex for wear is:

  • Use a silicone based lubricant such as ‘Vividress’, 'Pjur Bodyglide’ or ‘Pjur Cult Dressing Aid’. Apply a thin coating to the inside and outside of the garment (and your skin if necessary) prior to dressing.

  • We do not recommend the use of talc on your latex.

Rubber can be easily marked or torn with fingernails if excessive force is used when pulling on your new garment. Help prevent this by ensuring your garment is well lubricated for wear. You may also wish to wear a pair of disposable latex gloves to avoid any damage.

When handling latex with bare hands, make sure they are clean (and jewellery free) before coming into contact with your garment. Be aware that rubber can be stained permanently brown if it comes in contact with copper, brass or bronze.

Never expose latex to essential oils.

Never use oil-based lubricants.

Never expose your garment to naked flames or strong heat sources.

Never let your latex touch copper, brass or bronze objects as they will discolour your garment.

Never apply body makeup, moisturisers or frangrance underneath or onto your latex.

Preparing Latex for Wear

Latex is sold un-polished, therefore will look dull until prepared and shined.

Cleaning

To prepare your new latex for wear, start by washing it gently with a soft ph-neutral soap, such as unscented baby shampoo, to remove any powder. This is easiest done in a clean sink filled with clean warm water. Never scrub or clean your garment with abrasives. After washing you can apply a product like Vivishine to permeate the latex with high quality silicone. Not only will it add to the lustre of the material but it will help nourish the latex for wear.

How to use Vivishine:

Dilute the equivalent of 1 capful per catsuit in a sink/bucket of clean warm water (enough water to cover your latex, irrespective of Vivishine ratio). After handwashing with soap, leave the garment in the Vivishine solution for one minute. Then swish the item around so it is evenly coated in the Vivishine solution. Pat dry thoroughly with a lint-free towel or cloth. For best results apply a layer of Vividress to shine before wear.

Do not drip dry your latex - pat dry and then air dry after washing.

Do not use Vivishine more often than every 3 washes. If you are using a cleaner such as Viviclean, please refer to the product for specific instructions.

Do not overshine before storing the garment - please see the next section for storage preparation.

Shining

To shine, we recommend you use a silicone based polish, such as 'Vividress', or ‘Pjur Bodyglide’ or ‘Pjur Cult Ultra shine Spray’. Never shine with furniture polish and avoid oil-based products as these will destroy the rubber. Apply the shine before and/or after you put the garment on. Do not rub the outer surface of your garment too hard, or with a rough cloth, as the glossy surface can be permanently scratched.

Preparing Latex for Storage

Cleaning

You can wash rubber garments in clean, warm water with a soft ph-neutral soap (like unscented baby shampoo). Always wipe away excess water and pat dry thoroughly with a soft towel. Rubber can be scratched if rubbed too hard, so be gentle.

Never tumble dry, dry clean or iron your garment.

Do not overshine the garment prior to storage. A Vivishine wash is fine, but don't add anymore product.

Storage

Latex clothes are best stored hung up in a cupboard away from sources of heat, light (particularly bright sunlight and strong UV light which will degrade light coloured clothes), metals, oils, solvents, greases and fire.

Avoid damp storage conditions. We recommend using a moisture absorbing product like DampRid in your latex closet. Keep light colours away from dark colours as colours may bleed into each other.

We recommend hanging your garments in breathable, lint-free garment bags.

Store different coloured latex seperately. If your latex has studded or metal details, do not store next to other garments.

Translucent Latex

Translucent and semi-transparent latex requires some additional care to traditional latex. Once properly cleaned and shined it should look like new for a long time to come but you will need to take some initial care to set the shine and care.

Before you handle your transparent garment ensure hands are thoroughly clean & dry and remove any jewellery on your hands & wrists.

Initial Cleaning & Polishing

To prepare your translucent latex for wear, follow the same instructions as the ‘Preparing Latex for Wear’ section. In addition to shining the outer surface of the garment, we recommend shining the inside surface also. This will aid in creating a higher degree of transparency. We recommend using a product like 'Vividress' - it's lightweight and brings out an excellent transparency and shine, with no streaks.

When you clean your latex, don't be alarmed if it goes 'mottled'. That's just the moisture trapped in the latex. Clean as normal. After you pat dry, allow to air dry. It will go away once it's dry, or when you next shine.

Wearing

Avoid self-tanners/spray tanners and be cautious with moisturisers, deodorants, perfumes and makeup as these may contain chemicals that will discolour transparent latex.

Storage

Store away from UV light in a cool dry space free from metals, oils, solvents, chemicals or damp. We strongly recommend storing each translucent garment in a separate garment bag. As with traditional latex the use of a moisture absorbing product will protect your latex further.

Damaged Latex

Max Black cannot take any responsibility for tears, splits, rips or any damage to your new latex garment. All latex items are checked prior to sale for quality control and sold intact and wearable.
